Tayvallich Community Hall has been at the heart of village life for nearly a century. There’s an exciting programme of events throughout the year, and the Hall can also be hired for private functions.

Here’s a taster of events and activities at the Hall; to find out what’s coming up, see the Tayvallich Village Events calendar at www.tayvallich.com

•Tayvallich Gala Weekend (last full weekend in July): the annual jamboree of fun and frolics, all proceeds from which are invested back into the Village Hall. It kicks off with a BBQ and music at the Tayvallich Inn on Friday night. On Saturday, the focus moves to the Hall: there are activities, sports and stalls (some selling local arts and crafts) on the playing field and food and drinks are served inside and outside the Hall. The fun dog show is always a popular event. The family ceilidh (with a live band) on the Saturday night attracts a huge crowd. The Grand and Children’s Raffles are drawn at the ceilidh, offering a chance to win fabulous prizes donated by local businesses, including vouchers for meals at the Tayvallich Inn and Tayvallich Coffee Shop. On Sunday morning, the World Crab-Fishing Championships take place on the Jetty and Jubilee Green.

•Concerts: the Hall has a great reputation as a live venue, attracting a wide variety of musicians and performers such as the Charlie McKerron Trio, Patsy Reid & Friends, Daimh, the Robin Robertson Blues Band, Gnoss, Breabach, Mairi Campbell, Balter, Dallahan, Pons Aelius, Latchepen. •Drama club: regular meetings and rehearsals throughout winter and spring culminate in an annual production at Easter. The title of the show is kept secret until the week before opening night.

•Tayvallich Lunch Club: a two-course meal once a month for those aged 60 and over.

•Fund-raising: race nights to raise funds for village amenities (eg, Tayvallich Sailing Club, which promotes sailing and provides training, particularly for the children’s group Cygnets); coffee mornings are held regularly throughout the year to benefit local groups, such as the church, Flower Show (+ plant sale in May), school (+ carwash in May), and charities (such as the Strawberry Tea in June in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support); ceilidhs in aid of the church and various charities; Christmas Craft Fair.

•Flower Show in August, with competitions for flowers, vegetables and home produce. Pupils from the village school are particularly encouraged to take part.

•Meetings: local councillors and other organizations (such as Friends of the Sound of Jura and Heart of Argyll Wildlife) hold meetings and give presentations in the Hall, and it is a polling station for elections.

•Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium: for those who are new to kayaking or novice/intermediate paddlers, three days (in May or June) to hone existing skills and on-the-water confidence. Also includes a ceilidh open to all on the Saturday night. https://www.midwestsymposium.co.uk/

Every week, the Hall is busy with a wide range of local clubs and groups: table tennis; yoga; carpet bowls; Stretch and Tone; hula hooping; the Tayvallich Primary School Pre-Fives Unit. If you want to start a group or need a venue for an activity, the Village Hall is the place for you.

The open-air sports court affiliated to the Hall is used regularly for tennis, football (including junior football) and netball and is available for other sports. Use of the court is free for villagers, and it can be booked by visitors for £5/hour via the register in the shed beside the court (there is an honesty box for fees at the gate to the court). Floodlights allow the court to be used year round: tokens for the lights can be bought from the village shop for £2.50 per half-hour.

The playing field beside the Hall with its children’s play park of swings, slide and other amusements is a popular attraction. The field can be used for football and other sports and is a focal point of the Tayvallich Gala Weekend.

All these community events are interspersed with a variety of private functions, including weddings and birthday celebrations. The kitchen can cater for up to 100 people. There is a bouncy castle for children’s parties. The Hall has a PA system, stage lighting and sound and a hearing loop. The tables, chairs and barbeques can also be hired separately for events off the premises.
